Vanda testacea

Introduction

Synonyms: Brick Red Vanda

Juice of this Vanda testacea leaves are used for treating bone fractures

Distribution & Occurrence:

Warm to intermediate growing epiphyte found in Western Ghats, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhtuan and Myanmar at elevations of 400 meters to 800 meters.

The Plant

Slow growing vandaceous orchid. Usually grows 1-2 new leaves per year and grow to up to 30 cm in height.

Usually blooms with multiple inflorescences with each inflorescence carrying 6-15 small flowers. Flowers have yellow sepal and petal and have lavender or pink or purple lip and spur. Each flower measures around 1-1.5 c.ms

Usually flowers once year during March/April


Cultural Requirements and Nutrition

Grows in bright light with at-least 2-3 hours of direct sunlight. I grow mine in a plastic pot with charcoal and coco chips. I fertilize weekly weakly with a balanced fertilizer.

Pest and Diseases

No specific pests or disease.

Hybrids

Selectively used in hybrids as a pollen parent and seed parent.

Bloomed in late Feb 2014/Mar 2014 with 2 inflorescence.




Blooming again in March 2015

I am growing these orchids in a plastic pot with coco chips and charcoal mix. I weakly weekly fertilize through out the year. It is growing in a bright location and Dend. receives direct sunlight for a couple of hours in a day and Phal. is in a shade under a tree.
