Dendrobium platygastrium

Dendrobium platygastrium Rchb. f. 1878 SECTION Calcarifera

Common Name: The Broad-Bellied Dendrobium

Dried flowers of Dendrobium longicornu are used as pickle in parts of Arunachal Pradesh. Juice of stems is consumed for fever and boiled roots fed to livestock suffering from caughs.

Distribution & Occurrence:

Hot to warm growing epiphyte found in New Guinea to Vanavatu at sea level to 1200 meters

The Plant

Small to Medium sized epiphyte with flat and club shaped pendulous stems with zig-zag leaf sheaths with oval thin and deciduous leaves

Blooms multiple times a year on apex of leaf and leaf less stems with a short racemose inflorescence with 6-12 fragrant flowers

Flower color is quite variable. Blooms from older and newer canes

Cultural Requirements and Nutrition

Grow in bright light with atleast few hours of direct sunlight. Prefer to to be mounted as likes to pendulous. Water and fertilize all around the year
