Dendrobium peguanum

Dendrobium peguanum Lindl. 1859 SECTION Stachyobium

Common Name: Pegu’s Dendrobium (Pegu is a town in Myanmar)


Distribution & Occurrence:

Eastern Himalayas to Thailand@ elevations of 300 to 400 Meters.

The Plant

Miniature sized hot to cool growing lithophyte, epiphyte with stout, oblong, conical pseudobulbs with 2-4 leaves

Blooms in the fall with one to several flowered racemose inflorescence with fragrant flowers(smell resembles clove).

Flowers once year during early or late fall and flower lasts a few weeks. Canes can re-bloom next year


Cultural Requirements and Nutrition

Grow in shade, medium should dry out soon. Water and fertilize during active growth period in summer and reduce watering & withhold fertilization in winter (after blooms) with occasional misting

Distribution & Occurrence:

Found in Philippines & Borneo at elevations of sea level to 300 meters

The Plant

Small to large sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte with elongated, branching roots and oblong leaves

Blooms from axillary short inflorescence with 1-2 fragrant and long lasting flowers. This orchid can re-bloom from the same nub multiple times.

Flower color is quite variable from yellowish brown to red
Blooms almost all year around.


Cultural Requirements and Nutrition

Grow in bright light with atleast few hours of direct sunlight. Grows quite fast compared to vandas. Fertilize and water all year around

Rhynchostylis gigantea

Common Name: The Giant Rhynchostylis


Distribution & Occurrence:

Myanmar to Vietnam at sea level to 700 meters

The Plant

Warm to hot growing medium sized vandaceous epiphyte with stout stem and fleshy long root. Leaves are fan shaped, very thick, leathery with prominent pale green longitudinal stripes in the leaves

Blooms in fall and winter with long, dense & many-flowered inflorescence.

Flowers once year during early or late fall and flower lasts 2 weeks and are very fragrant. Flowers open over 2-3 days

Colors are quite variable for the species and have been interbred to create many more color variations

Cultural Requirements and Nutrition

Grow in bright indirect light. Though it is vandaceous it can be grown in Phalaenopsis light levels. resents  repotting and hence repot only during new root growth.
